In the fifth year of the 2015 Paris Convention, our chances of limiting the global temperature increase with "1.5 °C" are decreasing. From the simultaneous occurrence of multiple hurricanes over the Atlantic Ocean to wildfires in Australia, disasters exacerbated by climate change are on the rise around the world, and the hottest year record is broken almost once every year. 936 climate-based disasters occurred in 2019 in Turkey. Keeping the record in this respect, 2019 is followed by 2018 with 871 disasters and 2015 with 731 disasters. We recently experienced a dust storm in Ankara, a life-threatening flood in Giresun and hail rains in Istanbul. Implementing effective climate action policies to solve the climate crisis is more urgent and vital than ever.
At this significant milestone, the European Union Delegation to Turkey and UN Development Programme will perform the press launch of the EU Climate Diplomacy Week campaign, hosted by the Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut as the Head of EU Delegation to Turkey and Caludio Tomas as the Representative of UNDP Turkey, with the participation of Prof. Dr. Mehmet Emin Birpınar as the Deputy Minister of T.R. Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, Fatma Şahin as the President of Union of Municipalities of Turkey, and the Mayor of Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality, on September 26, while, on the other hand, encouraging everyone to participate in the campaign, to organize personal events and to share their climate action stories.
