European Union, Turkish Government and municipalities are taking another step further within the large scale project to solve healthy drinking water and waste water related problems of 21 province and districts.
Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation and Municipalities, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding in Ankara on 30 April 2013,have determined their roles and responsibilities in the scope of “Technical Assistance to Prepare Integrated Water Projects”, the responsibilities of the municipalities and procedures like information and document sharing and obtaining required permissions have been committed.
This project, directly concerned with approximately 2,5 million people, is part of a large scale programme for meeting the needs of water management and is financed by the Turkish Government and the European Union.
Within the scope of the project, facility construction costs all around Turkey - from Çanakkale to Yüksekova –will be co-financed by EU, Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation and Municipalities. EU will cover 85% of this total amount, while Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation will an average of 5 %.Municipalities will take on only 10% of the investment. Approximate investment scale for 21 integrated water projects in total is as follows:
• Total investment (approx.): € 454,000,000
• EU funding: € 386,000,000
• Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation funding: € 28,000,000
• Contribution of Municipalities: € 40,000,000
Objectives of the project, aiming at development of water and sewerage infrastructure in line with EU norms, are as follows:
• Improvement of drinking water systems,
• Construction of treatment plants,
• Preventing pollution of surface waters like rivers and creeks,
• Preventing floods in in-city sewerage systems by parsing the rainwater collection systems,
• Preventing pollution of underwater resources,
• Preventing health problems stemming from waters being polluted or not being treated properly.
