Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum, at the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations (UN) Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) held in Egypt , stated that they have updated Türkiye's National Contribution Statement and increased the target of reducing emissions from 21 percent to 41 percent.
Minister Kurum, United Nations (UN) Framework Convention on Climate Change 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) after sharing the National Contribution Statement with the international community at the UN Ministerial Meeting, he announced the decision taken on live television. Stating that all countries are struggling against climate change and that the decisions they have taken at this point are shared, Minister Kurum said that there were 35 thousand participants from 197 countries in the conference and that they came to Egypt with representatives from various sectors to represent Türkiye.
Pointing out that Türkiye has taken decisive steps to combat climate change and that they are working in line with the net zero emission target, Minister Kurum said: "In 2015, we notified the Secretariat of our emissions and the rates realized in emissions within the scope of the UN Framework Convention. We have pledged to reduce emissions by 21 percent by 2030, which should be 1 billion 175 million. Today we updated our National Contribution Statement. As Türkiye, we are increasing our reduction target to 41 percent from the increase we announced as 21 percent for 2030. We are making a commitment that is almost twice as large as we will have reduced emissions by approximately 500 million tons by 2030. Here again, it was the year when our emissions would peak on an important issue that we shared with the whole world. We will peak our emissions by 2038 at the latest and continue to move towards our net zero target with our strong policies." Minister Kurum wished that these commitments would be beneficial for the whole world and Türkiye.
"We Announced Our COP31 Candidacy to the Whole World"
Emphasizing that they have announced their candidacy for the COP meeting to be held in 2026 to the whole world at the UN Ministerial Conference, Minister Kurum said, "We have announced our candidacy for COP31 to the whole world and we are making the official application to the UN Secretariat. As Türkiye, we have hosted many conferences before. As a country that has hosted both humanitarian conferences and COP meetings, we have announced our candidacy for the 31st COP meeting in order to share Türkiye's new breakthroughs with the whole world"
Explaining that they gave information about Türkiye's work at COP27, Minister Kurum added that they explained the Zero Waste application, Zero Waste Blue and action plans.
