COP31 Diplomacy in Copenhagen

Murat Kurum, President of COP31 and Türkiye’s Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, held an intensive series of high-level meetings focused on climate diplomacy during his engagements in Copenhagen.

As part of the program, Minister Murat Kurum met with several senior officials, including Lars Aagaard, Stientje Van Veldhoven, Selwin Hart and Leena Yla-Mononen.

Hosted by Frederik X, the meetings also brought together Chris Bowen and Andre Correa do Lago to discuss the shared global agenda on climate and energy. Discussions focused on implementation-oriented solutions to the global climate crisis, opportunities for international cooperation and preparations for COP31.

During the sessions in Copenhagen, ongoing cooperation with Brazil, Australia and Azerbaijan was reviewed, while participants exchanged views on practical pathways to keep the 1.5-degree target within reach. In the session titled “Enhancing Resilience and Accelerating Adaptation Action,” international cooperation opportunities aimed at strengthening societies against climate risks were also discussed.

In his meeting with Dutch Minister for Climate and Green Growth Stientje Van Veldhoven, Minister Murat Kurum evaluated bilateral cooperation opportunities in the fields of climate change and circular economy. The importance of international solidarity in the lead-up to COP31 was underlined, while the messages emerging from the Santa Marta process were closely followed.

Minister Murat Kurum emphasized that global climate solidarity has entered a new era focused on implementation, reaffirming Türkiye’s commitment to advancing strong diplomatic partnerships for the future of the planet.
