Deputy Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Ms. Fatma Varank, participated in the Interactive High-Level Segment held on May 1, 2025, in Geneva, Switzerland, as part of the Conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions.

Emphasis on Circularity and Sustainability
In her remarks at the panel, Ms. Varank addressed the topics of circularity and sustainability within the plastic value chain, drawing attention to the environmental, economic, and social impacts of plastic pollution. She emphasized that the transition to a circular economy is a shared global responsibility, announcing that Türkiye has finalized its draft national circular economy strategy and action plan, which will soon be shared with the public. She noted that plastics are identified as a key value chain within this plan.

Türkiye’s Contribution to International Conventions
Highlighting the roles of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions in managing plastic waste and chemicals, Ms. Varank explained that the Basel Convention regulates plastic waste, the Rotterdam Convention controls chemicals used in plastic production, and the Stockholm Convention addresses the management of persistent organic pollutants.

Global Recognition for the Zero Waste Movement
Ms. Varank also spoke about the Zero Waste Movement, led under the auspices of the First Lady of Türkiye, Her Excellency Emine Erdoğan. She noted that the initiative has led to significant transformation in Türkiye and that March 30 has been declared International Zero Waste Day by the United Nations.

Innovative Solutions and Digital Transformation
In the second part of the panel, Ms. Varank shared insights on sustainable design and material innovation, stating that developing countries have strong potential to generate innovative solutions in this field, and that digital technologies enhance transparency and efficiency in these processes.

Bilateral Meetings and Messages of Cooperation
Deputy Minister Ms. Fatma Varank also held bilateral meetings with Roger Baro, Minister of Environment, Water and Sanitation of Burkina Faso, and Rolph Payet, Executive Secretary of the BRS Conventions. The meetings focused on exploring opportunities for cooperation in the fields of environment, waste, and chemical management.
