The Plastic Pollution Agreement Ministerial Consultation Meeting held within the scope of the United Nations General Assembly was held in New York. Our Deputy Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Ms. Fatma Varank, was present at the meeting representing Türkiye.
Our Deputy Minister, Ms. Fatma Varank, chaired the sessions as a co-facilitator in the meeting held in cooperation with the Governments of Canada and Norway, and the high-level delegation of our Ministry also attended the meeting as participants.
Recognizing that plastic pollution is a global problem requiring urgent attention, the meeting aims to accelerate the conclusion of an ambitious and effective global agreement with control measures across the entire lifecycle until the end of INC-5, bringing the talks to the political level, deepening understanding on national priorities and positions on key negotiating issues, identifying areas of merger and divergence, and bridging existing gaps.
The meeting was organized in three sessions, and in the "Plastic Production and Consumption" session, Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment of Egypt, and Mr. Juan Carlos Monterrey, Special Representative for Climate of Panama; In the "Products, Chemicals and Waste" session, Deputy Minister Ms. Fatma Varank and Antigua and Barbuda Minister of Health, Welfare and Environment Sir Molwyn Joseph; In the "Tools for Implementation" session, Ms. Ophelia Mensah, Minister of Ghana and Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, and Ms. Anne Beathe Tvinnereim, Minister of International Development of Norway, contributed to the work as co-facilitators.
