Deputy Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and Türkiye’s Chief Climate Negotiator, Ms. Fatma Varank, attended the 97th Bureau Meeting of the Barcelona Convention held in Athens, Greece.
Six Country Representatives at the Same Table
The meeting brought together representatives from six member countries of the Convention: Slovenia (Chair of the Bureau), Egypt, Spain, Morocco, Malta, and Montenegro.
Appreciation for the Mediterranean and Emphasis on Cooperation
In her opening speech, Ms. Varank expressed her gratitude to the Secretariat and all member states for their dedicated contributions to the process. Highlighting Türkiye’s significant experience in areas such as marine monitoring, biodiversity, water, wastewater, air, chemicals, and waste management under the framework of the Barcelona Convention, she drew attention to the progress achieved in these fields.
Zero Waste, Green Ports, and Sustainable Tourism
Ms. Varank noted that the Zero Waste Movement, launched in 2017, has become a model both nationally and internationally. She emphasized Türkiye’s continued dedication to the future of the Mediterranean through green ports, Blue Flag beaches, and sustainable agriculture and tourism initiatives.
Call for Support to CC/RAC
Underlining the importance of support from all countries for the Climate Change Regional Activity Centre (CC/RAC), which will operate under the Barcelona Convention in Türkiye, Ms. Varank stated that the center will make valuable contributions in the fight against the impacts of climate change.
Message of Candidacy for COP31 Presidency
Ms. Varank also reiterated Türkiye’s candidacy to host the COP31 Presidency in 2030, stressing the importance of working together for a more resilient, greener, and sustainable future.
Technical Briefing Presentation
During the meeting, Mr. Fatih Turan, Director General of Environmental Management, delivered a presentation to the Bureau members, providing updates on the work carried out so far regarding the CC/RAC.
