Minister Murat Kurum attended the OECD Environment Ministers' Meeting on the first day of his visit to Paris. Addressing the participants at the session, which was attended by the environment ministers of the member states, the Institution explained Turkey's green transformation efforts.

Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum attended the general session of the OECD Meeting of Environment Ministers in Paris on the theme of "Transition to Net Zero-Closing the Range of Requests for Climate Change Reduction and Adaptation". The Institution addressed the participants at the session hosted by OECD Secretary General Mathias Cormann and attended by the member state's environment ministers; Stating that they have made great progress in the studies of the Climate Law, he stated that they will carry out green transformation in the country, especially energy, in line with the 2053 Net Zero Emissions target under the law.

Climate Change Measures

Stating that they are working to adapt to the effects of climate change in Turkey and to make livelihoods, economy and natural systems less affected by climate change, the Agency said that they are focusing on important measures such as "increasing the resistance of the agricultural sector to drought, reducing flood and flood risks through increased storage and infrastructure management, integrated management of water resources and protecting ecosystems".

Minister Kurum noted that Turkey has updated its "Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan" prepared in 2011 according to the 2053 targets.

Stating that national studies as well as regional and local studies are important in adapting to climate change and ensuring resilience, the Institution said that in this context, they have developed projects aimed at determining the needs of regions and cities, taking necessary measures for 7 geographical regions and developing nature-based solutions.

World at Critical Threshold

Pointing out that the world is at a critical threshold in climate change, it said, "As states, we are all in global cooperation in line with the 1.5 degrees Celsius goal of the Paris Climate Agreement." Especially in the 26th century. Stating that this solidarity and determination was shown to the world at the Conference of the Parties, the Institution said, "But now we urgently need to take steps quickly to realize our actions towards our medium and long-term goals. Therefore, we must increase our cooperation more than ever to turn the crises we are experiencing on a global scale into opportunities."

National Contribution Statement to Be Updated Later This Year

Stating that they will update the National Declaration of Contribution submitted to the UN Secretariat in 2015 in accordance with the 2053 Net Zero target announced to the world by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Institution said:

"We have made great progress in our climate law studies, which will form the legal basis for both our Shura decisions and our National Contribution Statement. Within the scope of the law, we will carry out green transformation in our country, especially energy, in line with our 2053 Net Zero Emissions target. We will improve and increase our swallowing areas, especially our forests. With the goal of becoming a climate-resistant society, we will conduct science-based impact, impactability analyses and further strengthen compliance activities. We will ensure the flow of resources to the local by taking the necessary measures to strengthen local climate action."
