Construction to begin on a new solid waste management plant in Çorum Municipality

The Ministry of Environment and Urbanization (MoEU) through the Department of European Union (EU) Investments announced the start of the Çorum Solid Waste Management Project. The kick off meeting was held this week under the auspicious of the Minister of Environment and Urbanization H.E. Fatma Güldemet Sarı.

The Head of the Department of EU Investments (DoEUI) Ferruh Parmaksız, Çorum Mayor Muzaffer Külcü, head of Çorum Provincial Directorate of Environment and Urbanization Seyit Ahmet Sancak, Contract Manager Burak Yılmaz and representatives of district municipalities attended the meeting.

On this occasion, Mr. Ferruh Parmaksız said: “This Project will eliminate a long-standing and a very serious problem of Çorum. Recycling, treatment and waste collection centers to be constructed will end the trouble of this city.”

The solid waste storage facility will be built in three stages and will, on completion of this project, have a capacity of 1.245.320 m3 (one cell). This plant is expected to accommodate the community’s needs for another 23 years. The landsite where construction will begin will house another three cells to be built under future initiatives and which will have a maximum storage capacity of 3.5 million m3. The facility will include leachate collector lines, gas collection and a burning system.

The materials recycling facility (200 ton capacity), a compost facility (200 ton capacity) and a leachate treatment plant (LTP) (with 125 m3/h capacity including a 3.5 km pipeline from LTP to the municipal sewerage) and four transfer centers will also be constructed within the framework of the project. Twenty eight hazardous waste storage sites will be rehabilitated to landfill areas and related machinery and equipment for all facilities will be purchased. The budget of the project is approximately 21-million Euro, financed by both national and EU funds.
