With the participation of our Deputy Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, H.E. Fatma Varank, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan & COP29 Chief Negotiator Yalchin Rafiyev, the inception workshop was held for Türkiye’s First and Second Biennial Transparency Reports and the Ninth National Communication prepared under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The meeting, held in Ankara, was also attended by our President of Climate Change, Prof. Dr. Halil Hasar, representatives of international organizations, and relevant stakeholders. In her opening speech, Deputy Minister Varank underlined that Türkiye is one of the countries in the Mediterranean basin most affected by the climate crisis, emphasizing that climate change is not only an environmental problem, but also an inseparable element of development, economic competitiveness, and social welfare.
Highlighting the importance of the finance decision taken at COP29, Deputy Minister Varank stated that without sufficient climate finance, climate action in developing countries is not possible. She stressed that Türkiye will reinforce its determination to be a pioneering and exemplary country in the global climate struggle with its goal of hosting COP31. Thanking national and international partners, she concluded: “I once again underline that our efforts will resolutely continue for a transparent, sustainable and climate-resilient Türkiye.”
Türkiye–Azerbaijan Climate Meeting
Following the opening program, Deputy Minister Varank held a meeting at our Ministry with Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister and COP29 Chief Negotiator Yalchin Rafiyev. During the talks, climate change, transparency reporting, and cooperation in COP processes were discussed with Rafiyev and his delegation. Deputy Minister Varank underlined that Türkiye and Azerbaijan act with a common vision and solidarity in the fight against climate change.
After the meeting, the Azerbaijani delegation, accompanied by Deputy Minister Varank and our Ministry’s officials, visited the Presidential Nation’s Library.
